Practical ideas for combining artificial grass, paving, planting and outdoor seating.

Make room for the way you use the garden. — Saygrass project

Start with the activities

Think about the places to sit, walk, play and store equipment before choosing the final lawn shape. Keeping a clear route to doors and sheds can be more useful than maximising the grass area.

A patio or deck can provide a firm seating area alongside the lawn. Discuss levels, steps and the transitions between surfaces at the survey.

Keep space for planting

Artificial grass does not replace living plants. Existing trees, shrubs and planted borders can give the garden structure and seasonal interest. Think about access to those borders for watering and care.

We can discuss the lawn shape, sleepers or edging and how the finish works around retained planting. Ground and root conditions need assessment rather than assuming every area can take the same base.

Use small spaces thoughtfully

A compact courtyard or side garden can still have distinct lawn and paved areas. A simple layout may be easier to use and clean than several small isolated pieces of grass.

Look at our real job photographs, including completed compact gardens, and compare samples in your own light.

Decorations and temporary events

For a temporary event, ask about grass hire. For decorations on an existing lawn, avoid heat, sharp fixings and anything likely to damage the fibres or base.

Keep barbecues, candles, fire pits and other hot items away from the artificial grass. Confirm any fixing method before pinning, gluing or loading a surface.
