Dog urine and artificial grass: cleaning and persistent odours

Pet use makes regular artificial grass care important. Cleaning the visible pile may improve the lawn, but persistent odours can also involve debris, infill or contamination in the underlying base.

Build a routine around actual use

Clear solid waste promptly and follow the aftercare guidance for your grass. Check areas used repeatedly, particularly beside borders or in sheltered corners. A small lawn used daily by several pets can need a different care routine from a lightly used ornamental garden.

Where the construction drains appropriately, follow the supplier’s instructions for rinsing and cleaning affected areas. Keep an eye on pooling and tell us if water does not pass through as expected. Adding more water is not a remedy for an unsuitable or blocked drainage route.

Choose treatments carefully

Use products intended for artificial grass and the relevant pet use, following the label and supplier instructions. Dilution, contact time, rinsing and any period before pets return are product-specific. Test an unobtrusive patch and keep cleaning products out of reach.

Do not mix chemicals or assume a strong fragrance means the underlying contamination has been removed. Bleach, boiling water, improvised acids and abrasive tools may damage components or create other hazards. Ask for suitable aftercare guidance instead of trying increasingly strong treatments.

Understand the base before promising a result

Our normal residential installations do not use sand infill. An optional specified material is a separate quotation choice, not a substitute for cleaning or functioning drainage. Existing lawns may have different constructions, and we cannot infer what lies beneath them from a photograph alone.

An old contaminated sand base can retain odour. A surface clean cannot guarantee complete removal or correct a failed base. If cleaning is unlikely to address the cause, repair or replacement needs a separate assessment and written scope.

Arrange artificial grass maintenance

Saygrass maintenance includes jet washing, power brushing and pet-safe shampoo, with optional deodorising discussed for the job. Permanently crushed or melted fibres cannot be restored by cleaning. The scope and price are confirmed for the condition, area and access.

Email photographs, the approximate area and your address to info@saygrass.co.uk. Mention pets and any previous treatments. You do not need an installation survey simply to request a cleaning quote. See our maintenance service for the next step.

Your questions, answered.

Is artificial grass maintenance-free when you have a dog?

No. Remove waste promptly and follow the product aftercare instructions. Cleaning needs depend on use, drainage and lawn construction.

Does deodorising repair a contaminated base?

No. Deodorising is not base reconstruction and cannot guarantee removal of contamination beneath the surface.
