Artificial grass edging: choosing a secure lawn boundary

The best edge detail depends on the lawn’s surroundings and how the grass will be secured. Think about the transition to paths, planting and doors as well as the material you can see.

Why the edge matters

A defined boundary helps the installation hold its shape and provides an appropriate fixing detail for the chosen construction. A tidy finish should account for the adjacent level, the intended use and how the perimeter can be inspected and maintained.

Loose or raised edges can create trip points and allow debris to collect. Fixings and adhesive choices must suit the surface and the use. A garden boundary detail should not be copied straight into a roof terrace or school project without checking those requirements.

Work with the surfaces already in place

An existing paved edge may provide a useful boundary if it is sound and at an appropriate level. Planting borders need a clear transition that limits loose soil spilling onto the pile. Where the lawn meets a path or door, assess level changes, drainage and the route people use.

Timber or other suitable edging components can form part of a quoted artificial grass installation. Their suitability depends on condition, construction and intended life. We discuss the edge as part of the lawn scope; this website does not offer standalone fence, patio or timber deck construction.

Drainage and maintenance access

An edge must not unintentionally block a drainage route or leave an important inspection point inaccessible. Existing drains, gullies and access covers should be identified at the survey and the finishing detail agreed before installation.

Ask how the boundary will be secured and what routine care is needed. A decorative appearance alone does not show whether the edge provides the fixing support required by the grass system. Future access to planting, services and structures also matters.

What to compare in quotations

Look for a written scope identifying preparation, base, grass, perimeter treatment, joins, waste handling and any agreed drainage or access-cover adjustments. Different prices may reflect different work rather than different margins for the same installation.

Use our installation cost calculator for an initial estimate, then book a free site survey for a quotation. The calculator is not a roll-layout plan and does not replace checking the actual boundary and ground conditions.

Your questions, answered.

Can you use the existing patio edge?

Possibly. We assess its condition, level, fixing options and drainage at the survey before confirming the lawn construction.

Do you offer edging as a standalone landscaping service?

Edging is discussed as part of an artificial grass installation or repair quotation. This website focuses on artificial grass services.
