Artificial grass in hot weather and reflected sunlight

Artificial grass can become hot in direct sunshine. Concentrated reflections from glazing and direct heat sources can also damage synthetic fibres, so planning the surroundings is part of caring for the lawn.

Check the surface before children or pets use it

Air temperature does not tell you how warm the lawn surface is. Conditions vary with sun, shade, the grass and surrounding materials. Check the surface before use and move activities to a cooler area when needed. Avoid treating any grass product as a guarantee against heat discomfort.

A garden design can retain planting and shaded seating so people have a choice of surfaces. Artificial grass does not replace the habitat or temperature behaviour of a living lawn. Consider the benefits and limitations together when deciding what suits your garden.

Keep direct heat away

Do not place barbecues, fire pits, candles, hot tools or recently used cooking equipment on artificial grass. Follow the appliance manufacturer’s clearances and use a suitable location away from the synthetic surface. A loose mat should not be assumed to make an otherwise unsafe position acceptable.

Avoid flame weeders and boiling-water treatments. Heat can alter or melt fibres, and cleaning cannot reverse that damage. Keep the installation and aftercare instructions with your project paperwork.

Look for concentrated reflections

If a damaged patch appears near glazing or another reflective object, record when sunlight reaches it and whether the problem changes during the day. Reflected light can concentrate energy on a small area. Do not assume a replacement patch will solve the issue if the source remains.

Discuss glazing-related changes with the building owner, glazing supplier or another relevant professional. Do not apply an improvised film or alter windows without checking compatibility, permissions and warranty implications.

Repair decisions and warranties

Send photographs, the job reference and an explanation of when the damage appeared. Saygrass can assess whether a repair or wider replacement is appropriate. We use grass supplied by Saygrass for repairs, and a patch may remain visible because older grass can look different.

Our 10-year grass UV warranty and 24-month workmanship cover have their own applicable terms. UV cover is not a blanket promise against burns or every kind of heat damage. See warranty guidance and repairs and replacement before assuming that a repair is covered.

Your questions, answered.

Can brushing fix melted artificial grass?

No. Cleaning and brushing do not restore melted fibres. Assess the cause before deciding how to repair or replace the affected area.

Does the UV warranty cover every kind of heat damage?

No. UV product cover is different from accidental burns or concentrated heat damage. Check the applicable terms for your product and job.
